Potosa Spa at Hotel Julien Review

Potosa Spa at Hotel Julien Review

By Sarah Janz

Agree with me! When conjuring up a true spa vacation getaway Dubuque, Iowa probably does not make your list! However, you may change your mind after learning about this city's fabulous destination - historic Hotel Julien and Potosa Spa!

Welcome to the city of Dubuque, Iowa. Nestled in the crux of the tri-state area of Wisconsin, Illinois, and Iowa along the limestone bluffs of the Mississippi River, Dubuque is filled with natural beauty and many wonderful attractions. This picturesque and historical town, with its quaint downtown shopping district and a newly renovated river walk, is also home to several modern casinos! Visitors to Dubuque can take a cruise on the river, visit museums, aquariums, race tracks, shops, wineries, along with enjoying some of the area's best dining experiences! With its endless raw beauty...the area also boasts wonderful hiking, biking and outdoor recreation. Enjoy the many festivals of the city beginning in May through November. Dubuque has a unique array of entertainment to appeal to all...and Hotel Julien is located at its epicenter!

The unique Hotel Julien was recently awarded the prestigious rating in Midwest Living Top 10 places to stay in 2011 offering both "Historic character and Modern Refinement" This remarkable hotel offers the area's most elegant accommodations. After a $30+ million dollar complete renovation, the Hotel Julien is now a true landmark of luxury and sophistication. Here, you can experience a full service hotel...which includes Caroline's Restaurant , Riverboat Lounge, Indoor pool and hot tub, fitness center, shuttle service, outdoor River Terrace, and free parking!

Originally established in 1839, the Hotel also boasts a unique and ominous history housing the notorious Al Capone! It is purported that there is a series of secret underground tunnels in and about the hotel, which ushered Capone undetected to safety.

However...the hidden Gem within Hotel Julien lies its very own Spa and Boutique "POTOSA". With its understated elegance, this full service spa offers a full array of massages, facials, bathing rituals and therapies to appeal to the most experienced spa- goer! Potosa also offer Day Packages, including those targeted to men and women, teens, mother to be, and bridal parties. In addition...within the spa is a full salon for hair, makeup and mani/pedi treatments!

Immediately upon entering the spa, guests are ushered to a private locker area where they are offered a luxurious robe and comfortable sandals. From there, guests enter the relaxation room which is truly a haven for the mind and soul! Comfortable lounge chairs abound this peaceful space....simple yet elegantly decorating to promote maximum comfort and well being. A large contemporary fireplace adorns the wall to further relax the spirit.

During my visit...I received the signature 65 minute "Potosa Massage". ..a unique blend of therapeutic massage of the body, gentle hair pulling, and use of aromatherapy to heighten the balance of mind and body. The massage therapist was experienced, friendly and accommodating to my preferences. I found the entire Potosa spa staff to be both professional and courteous.... exceeding standard customer service expectations!
Overall, although Dubuque at first blush does not appear to be a destination location....I had found the entire experience rich with history, charm, and all the character of a magnificent Midwestern city! A truly wonderful experience! A+++!
